Land Acknowledgement

As a settler, I am deeply grateful to live, work, and play across many traditional and unceded territories covering Turtle Island. I currently reside and do my work in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People, but I respectfully acknowledge that my work also extends across the territories of diverse First Nations in so-called British Columbia. I also recognize that people of African descent have been in Nova Scotia for over 400 years, and I honour and extend gratitude to those ancestors, along with the 50 African Nova Scotian communities throughout the region today.

I acknowledge the history of colonialism and the ongoing harm caused by oppressive policies and practices that continue to impact Indigenous Peoples in Canada, and recognizing land rights and territories of First Nations is only a small part in a larger process. I continue to learn and take steps forward through self-development and education, and will remain committed to creating a welcoming, respectful, and culturally safe space for everyone.
